I had the pleasure of working with Matt Sutherland on this piece. I have attached a paragraph below from Matt himself discussing 'Strain'.

"I wish for my work to give a visual representation of my recent history… including my sexual history and exploring my own sexuality and the bulimic physical illness that handicapped those times of exploration. This structure is a form of self-therapy; creating a raw, visually engaging representation of exploration, identification, and self-acceptance. I have peeked into the exploration of projecting vulnerability and insecurities through lens based and performative techniques, as well as discussing the relationship between man and liquid. Liquid brings hydration; hydration brings Life. Following an eating disorder, one of the strongest forms of therapy was through both discussion through verbal conversation and performance. To bring forth a sense of taboo and intrigue, my videos and performances usually contain material of a provocative nature and nudity (either on camera or in front of an audience). I then use this visual stimulant as a tool for portraying an almost autobiographical rendition of my recent experiences. I believe, to be a growing artist, that it is healthy to eradicate the prenotions of humiliation, allowing one’s self to be judged by others without contrition but with an objective mindset; being judged for the reasons and context behind your actions, not the actions themselves." - Matt Sutherland, 2019
